KARMAPA HISTORY SHAMARPA HISTORY

Portraits of H.H. the 17th Gyalwa Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje

Since the 12th century the Karmapas belong to the most important holders of the Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. The first Karmapa, Düsum Khyenpa (1110-1193) was among the foremost masters of his time. Prior to his death he indicated that he was going to take rebirth again in Tibet. The second Karmapa, Karma Pakshi (1204-1283) is thus considered the first consciously reborn lama of Tibet. Since then the successive Karmapa reincarnates manifested in Tibet; the Buddhist chronicles usually refer to them as the so-called “Black-Hat-Karmapas”. Each of the Karmapa’s reincarnation has revealed himself through his qualities and was then confirmed as the Karmapa’s authentic reincarnation by a realised disciple of his predecessor. In each reincarnation, the respective Karmapa has always contributed to the authentic maintenance of Buddhism in Tibet. The 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje (1924-1981), was furthermore instrumental in making Buddhism accessible also in the West.

The 17th Gyalwa Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje, was born in Lhasa (Tibet) in 1983. His father, Mipham Rinpoche, is the reincarnation of a very well-known master of the Nyingma school of Tibetan Buddhism. His mother, Dechen Wangmo, comes from a noble family from East Tibet and is an experienced dharma-practitioner as well.

Already as a small child the Karmapa told at a number of occasions, among others his parents, that he is the Karmapa. This message also reached Künzig Shamarpa, second to the Gyalwa Karmapa in the Kagyü Tradition. Künzig Shamarpa therefore examined the boy, thereby focussing on the century old procedures applied for that according to the Kagyü tradition. He confirmed that Trinley Thaye Dorje is the authentic Karmapa reincarnation but made his recognition public only once the Gyalwa Karmapa had left his Tibetan home in 1994: On March 17th, 1994 an official welcoming ceremony took place in New Delhi and the young 17th Karmapa, Trinley Thaye Dorje, the authentic Holder of the Black Hat, was introduced to the public.

Since then the training of the Gyalwa Karmapa which was started already in Tibet continues under the guidance of Künzig Shamarpa. Focus is on Buddhist philosophy and meditation. Furthermore the Karmapa receives all those transmissions which are essential for a lineage holder of Tibetan Buddhism, in particular those which are important for the Kagyü School.
